Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to nurture the inherent potential, work ethic and talents of each individual student. As a teacher, I help my students develop their craft and artistry to effectively communicate meaning in music and to deepen their understanding of this art-form. Under my guidance, we work towards developing proficient keyboard technique, effective practice strategies and time management, fluency in structural analysis, and critical thinking in musical interpretation. I encourage open and respectful communication that encompasses the whole individual personality of the student. Together with my students, we work together towards establishing performance goals, reviewing them, and adapting when necessary.

My experience has afforded me an appreciation of the all-encompassing nature of musical development. I investigate performance, competition, and career opportunities for my students and highly encourage collaborations with instrumentalists, vocalists, and ensembles, as well as community outreach. Competitions are useful teaching tools since they compel students to practice with more focus than they might otherwise.

The life experience of each individual student has the potential to be enhanced by this intensive study in the fine arts. Students who gravitate to the study of music will be encouraged to see the livelong benefits of this pursuit and that their work will be a positive contribution to their community whether as performers, collaborators, educators, and many possible combinations thereof. My approach aims to reinforce the independence, creativity and inner resourcefulness of each student, to serve them throughout their lives.

Private Lessons:

30, 45, and 60 minute piano lessons are available for students of all ages and levels. Lessons are offered Monday to Friday. Music Theory lessons are also available.

Online options:

Currently most lessons are in person.  Zoom/Skype lessons are also available.

Practice:

Daily practice for at least five days of the week is recommended. I encourage parents to schedule daily practice. The discipline of daily practice leads to progress which fuels motivation to continue to learn.

Studio Recitals:

Students are welcome to perform in studio recitals held in December and June.

Exams and Festival:

Students have the option to prepare for Royal Conservatory of Music Examinations and to participate in festivals.  This is an excellent opportunity for students to receive further evaluation and certification for the diligence applied to their music studies.
